Established in 1996, this Award is named after Pura Belpre, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. The Pura Belpre Awards honor a Latino writer and illustrator whose children's books best portray, affirm and celebrate the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of children's or young adult literature.
